About

The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. LMV empowers voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels.

In an era where the integrity of elections is frequently questioned, the spread of misinformation and disinformation regarding democratic governance poses a significant threat to civic engagement. The League of Women Voters recognized a critical gap: while they had a dedicated grassroots network, their members and volunteers needed more robust tools to navigate this complex landscape.

The challenge was not just to inform, but to actively equip this network with accurate, timely intelligence. The organization needed a scalable way to transform complex research into accessible media literacy education, enabling volunteers to identify false narratives and restore voter confidence in their local communities.

Challenge

LMV worked with the National Conference on Citizenship to transform social media data engaged in online discourse about elections, voting, and democratic governance, provided by Bright Data’s real-time webscrapers and proxy infrastructure, into clear, practical resources for education and engagement through:

  • Ongoing monitoring of disinformation narratives and LLM-informed rumor topic analysis 
  • Integration of real-time topic monitoring and automated systems to surface emerging election-related claims
  • Synthesis of insights into monthly rumor intelligence briefings, state-specific reports, and training sessions to equip League members to better respond to rumors in their communities

Impact

By analyzing post data from over 40,000 social media accounts, the initiative generated insights that informed regular briefings for more than 1,500 members nationwide. This data capability enabled the delivery of state-specific rumor reports for Leagues in Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, providing the localized context necessary for tailored voter education. Furthermore, the collaboration with League leadership ensured that this quantitative analysis was directly integrated into ongoing election protection and civic engagement efforts, aligning technical resources with the organization’s broader advocacy goals.

84% of participants reported feeling more informed after participating in the briefings.
92% said they are more confident in their ability to address election-related rumors.
62% have actively applied briefing content in their League work, such as community outreach and voter education.
