About
OSR4Rights is an organization dedicated to transforming the discovery and documentation of human rights violations through open-source research. By examining the current utilization of open-source research in human rights investigations, OSR4Rights aims to determine how this evidence can be more systematically leveraged for future human rights documentation.
Challenge
Human rights investigators often face barriers in accessing affected regions, making open-source evidence crucial. However, the vast amount of evidence available on social media and other platforms can be overwhelming, and investigators must navigate issues like algorithmic bias, misinformation, and obfuscation. To address these challenges, OSR4Rights partnered with The Bright Initiative. They utilized Bright Data’s Proxy Infrastructure on their Auto-Archiver, which includes a Facebook Archiver, to securely and effectively conduct open-source investigations. This collaboration ensured that investigators could access and archive vital social media content, with enhanced efficiency.
Impact
This collaboration has provided human rights investigators with robust tools to conduct open-source investigations securely. By leveraging public web data, OSR4Rights has been able to process over 100,000 links and over 3 TB of images and videos for their human rights efforts. The tools developed, such as the Auto-Archiver, are essential assets for investigators, enabling them to preserve useful online content and fight human rights violations.
