About

Founded by former US President Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter in partnership with Emory University, The Carter Center is committed to promoting human rights, alleviating suffering, and fostering freedom and democracy. From resolving conflicts to improving global health, its work spans critical challenges. Leveraging various technological tools, the Center focuses on measurable results to address complex issues across regions worldwide.

Challenge

The growing prevalence of election-related misinformation undermines democratic institutions worldwide. In Sri Lanka, combating harmful narratives requires localized strategies and cross-organizational collaboration. In the U.S., challenges involve detailed monitoring of elections at state and county levels, while in Argentina, addressing climate issues necessitates the integration of digital monitoring tools. Across these regions, scalable, multi-purpose platforms are essential to collect, analyze, and act on vital data. To overcome these challenges, the Carter Center uses Junkipedia, a project supported by Bright Data’s tools, as its primary data collection tool to address these multi-regional challenges.

Impact

Junkipedia has become an indispensable tool for The Carter Center, enabling it to monitor digital spaces systematically. In Sri Lanka, the organization has strengthened democratic processes by training local groups like Center for Monitoring Election Violence and #Generation, while delivering critical reports to the British High Commission. In the US, Junkipedia’s targeted “Actor Sets” feature to monitor specific groups of people or institutions across platforms has facilitated detailed election monitoring in strategic areas. Beyond elections, the tool has been instrumental in collecting data for climate and extractive industry debates in Argentina, driving informed research and action on critical issues.
