About
Global Witness uses cutting-edge investigations to expose the financial and political systems enabling industries to fuel the climate crisis. A recent report investigated the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), which mandates that large corporations address environmental and human rights harms across their value chains.
Challenge
The Global Witness team utilized Bright Data’s SERP API to automate their data collection pipeline. By scraping emissions data from over 4,000 companies, they provided their Large Language Model (LLM) with a consistent stream of reliable public web data.
Their research uncovered staggering figures:
- 2 Billion Tons of CO2: The annual emissions produced by companies currently covered by the CSDDD.
- Additionally, these companies were responsible for a further 23 billion tons of emissions from their full supply chains.

Impact
By mapping lobbying networks and verifying corporate climate pledges against self-reported emissions data, Global Witness provided policymakers with the facts needed to keep the CSDDD robust and ensure corporate liability.
