About

The Internet Society stands at the forefront of advancing global Internet infrastructure. Committed to creating an Internet ecosystem that is open, secure, and beneficial, the Internet Society is a global charitable organization that drives the development of technologies, standards, and policy. Currently, the Internet Society is working on a study to understand “where content is located” on the Internet. Part of its 50/50 Vision to keep at least half of Internet traffic local in selected economies by 2025, the project collects web content from top websites, analyzing HTTP responses to derive location information (Geohints).

Challenge

The Internet Society’s project faces a significant challenge: conducting a detailed study of web content locations with limited bandwidth, targeting various websites across different networks in twelve countries. This is where The Bright Initiative steps in. The Internet Society uses a mix of Bright Data’s Residential, ISP, and Datacenter proxies to gain maximum ASN coverage. Bright Data’s API is equipped to support the Internet Society’s research, providing necessary technical guidance to successfully execute this study.

Impact

This collaboration has the potential to profoundly affect our understanding of the internet. The solution enables the Internet Society to effectively study the geographical distribution of online content. This endeavor stands to influence future global Internet policies and practices, embodying our mission to drive positive change using publicly available data.
