About

The UN Integrated Drought Management Program (IDMP) is a collaborative initiative, spearheaded by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Water Partnership (GWP). IDMP aims to mitigate drought risk and enhance resilience through a comprehensive approach. With an emphasis on disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation strategies, and the implementation of effective national water policies, IDMP seeks to address the diverse impacts of drought across all affected sectors.

Challenge

Recognizing the potential of publicly available web data in tackling global drought and flood challenges, IDMP team embarked on a groundbreaking project in partnership with The Bright Initiative using Bright Data’s market leading data collection products. Together, they are striving to develop a first-of-its-kind tool that utilizes data from various web sources, such as public social media posts and media reports, to closely study, predict, and respond to these increasingly prevalent natural disasters.

Impact

The collaborative effort between IDMP and The Bright Initiative is set to transform how we approach and manage droughts and floods. This proactive approach has the potential to significantly reduce the impacts of these disasters on human life, economies, and the environment. It also sets a precedent for future initiatives where public data can be used to predict and manage global challenges, demonstrating how technology can be harnessed to safeguard our planet.
