About
Grocer Check is a student-run non-profit organization that developed a web application platform which allows users to check how busy a grocery store is, at any given time. The platform assisted consumers in adhering to social distancing guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Aiding in COVID-19 social distancing efforts
- Providing real-time data on grocery store customer activity, promoting safer shopping times
Challenge
With the rapid spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing became crucial. However, consumers lacked real-time data on the busyness of grocery stores, making it challenging to avoid crowded times. Grocer Check, aimed to address this by providing live data on grocery store customer visits and activity. To achieve this, they required a reliable data collection platform to gather and present this information to users. The Bright Initiative stepped in to support Grocer Check in this endeavor, providing them with leading web data collection technology.
As a student-run NPO dedicated to giving people the resources and knowledge they need to stay safe during the COVID-19 global pandemic, we needed access to location density data on demand. Bright Data’s technology has provided us with this, and our project has been expanding into even more states and countries.

Impact
By leveraging Bright Data’s online data collection platform, Grocer Check was able to provide users with real-time data on grocery store customer visits, as well as weekly crowd averages for specific supermarkets. This initiative not only promoted social distancing but also helped in the broader effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve. The pilot, initially launched in Vancouver, saw significant interest and usage, leading to its expansion to multiple cities across North America and even Liverpool.
