About

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations with the mission of fostering a balanced and effective international intellectual property (IP) system that promotes innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. With 193 member states, WIPO serves as the global forum for IP services, policy, information, and cooperation. WIPO ALERT is a secure, online platform to which authorized bodies in WIPO member states can upload details of websites or apps which have been determined to infringe copyright according to national rules.

  • Empowering WIPO to identify and act against IP infringing sites
  • Helping brands maintain their integrity by preventing association with illicit content
  • Providing tools for advertisers to make informed decisions, ensuring ads are placed on legitimate platforms

Challenge

WIPO, in collaboration with The Bright Initiative, aims to combat intellectual property infringing sites globally through the WIPO Alert platform. Leveraging Bright Data’s advanced technology and the vast public web data, WIPO uses the Web Scraper IDE to identify and take action against these sites. When a WIPO Alert member reports on an IP infringing site and takes actions against it, the scrapers built on Bright Data’s platform are monitoring its status. With this real time monitoring, WIPO ensures the reported sites do not stay active, parked, or redirecting to any other site.

Public web data is an invaluable source of information as to the scale and location of infringement on the Internet. We are most grateful that The Bright Initiative’s contribution has enhanced WIPO ALERT, a voluntary program which promotes online safety by helping advertisers avoid misplacement of ads on suspected illicit websites.”

Thomas Dillon, Legal Counsellor, WIPO

Impact

Through this collaboration, WIPO can significantly reduce the number of intellectual property infringement sites, protecting the rights of creators. By providing advertisers with tools to avoid placing ads on illicit websites, the initiative not only protects brand reputation but also minimizes the revenue streams of these pirate sites. This project can lead to a safer and more transparent digital advertising ecosystem, benefiting both brands and consumers.
